Research: Cinematography Practitioners

Roger Deakins:

Roger Deakins has been involved in cinematography in a career spanning since 1975. His work as a director of photography includes, The Shakshank Redemption (1994), Skyfall (2012) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017).

The Shawshank Redemption (Frank Darabont 1994):

This scene has been described as Deakins' most iconic work. The extreme contrast the lighting creates combined with the the high angle view looking down on Andy creates the high intensity of Andy's moment of freedom.

Deakins' is also know to bounce light a lot. In The Shawshank Redemption, he uses daylight and bounces it to fit the frames of the scenes outside, like in the scene above.

Conrad Hall:

Conrad Hall was a Cinematographer that always talked to the director about lighting and less about blocking. Hall has a specific method of bouncing light he calls "the room tone" where he uses walls, floor and ceiling to bounce a key light which he normally points at "the story" in his own words.

- An example of Hall using the room tone in American Beauty (1999). The light bounces off the table and onto the faces of the actors. The floor is also lit with bounced light despite there being no visible source.

Whilst my research into these two cinematographers is very brief, I've taken note from how they've used lighting in their shots which will be useful for me to be aware of when I frame the shots for our film during production.
